Fly fishing in Southland

Treat yourself to hundreds of kilometres of world class fly fishing water in New Zealand's Southland region. Beyond the main rivers outlined below there are a myriad of smaller streams and burns that offer excellent fly fishing opportunities… how much time do you have to explore and enjoy?!

Mataura and Waikaia

Paradise for the trout fishing purist! The Mataura river is the ultimate in targeting sighted Brown Trout on a dry fly. Mayfly hatches are prolific and fish numbers good.

Enjoy stalking Brown trout along kilometres of cover-giving grassy banks, willows and gravel beaches. The incredible transluscent blue water holds many enticing long, deep pools and productive riffles.

A tributary of the Mataura, the tanin-coloured Wakaia offers different challenges along its many long glides.

Finding a quiet and unpressured spot on the Mataura is hard. I'll help with invaluable local knowledge on access across private land, hatches and fly selection.
